Estudiar un idioma es algo que hoy en día es una forma de ayudar al desarrollo de distintos aspectos de una persona, ya sea en el ámbito laboral, académico o personal.

Una forma interesante de aprender una lengua es estudiarla en el país que la hable. De esta forma el estudiante no solo aprenderá el idioma en sí, sino que conocerá la sociedad que la habla y contemplará la forma ‘natural y original’ en que el idioma se utiliza.

La experiencia de la inmersión lingüística permite que el estudiante entre en contacto con una sociedad diferente y aprenda mucho más que una lengua nueva. Por otro lado, estas experiencias siempre ayudan a formar a un individuo que respete y comprenda que no todas las culturas son, ni tienen que ser, iguales.

Language travels, a new way for learning English.

Yes, language travels are a way of learning, not only English, but many languages. It is a system that offers another face of the language teaching. In any case, I do not believe that it tries to replace to a normal course of languages, but its impact is totally different from a few classes of languages, the normal ones.

If you want to learn English, language travel takes you to London, for example, a city where one speaks English, in order that you learn it and it is not the same as the bilingual school. And not only in order that you learn it in a course of a few hours, but in order that you have the opportunity to submerge in the language as fast as you can.

If in a few language classes, your relation with the language is of only for two daily hours, in the language travel the relation will be total because you are in a place that everybody speaks this language and with people who have learned it being babies and that therefore, they take as a natural language.

Language travels are also very educational because people have the opportunity to know different levels of the language that they learn. It happens because in a language travel you are not only to learn a language from a book and then practice it by the writing, and only your teacher knows. When you finish the hour of class, you have to face a totally unknown world in which you will have to be lived.

This need of insertion helps very much to the person that is learning the language due to the need that has for making itself and communicates with other people. Probably it is something that some could seem, violently or aggressively, but also it is true that a good way of learning something it is doing every day of every month.

And, in London, since it was the example (though for the English we find from USA to Australia, England and Ireland) you will have to test your knowledge day after day. On the other hand, it always is difficult to remember something if only you practice it once at day. But on the other hand, it is easier to learned all the past verbs in English, if you know that them at any time of the day.

Language travels are also a kind of travel where you can find yourself but if you decide to travel with friends, it will not. I believe that the most interesting of these experiences is to make it alone. Because being alone and in a different context from the normal one it starts one realizing how it is really (believe me that the routine does easily to forget this).

Being alone in a new place gives the opportunity to know the things in a different way; your look also will be free of pressures and of external influences.

This way, the learning of the English through language travels turns out to be a new, pleasant experience, restorer and very educational in the different levels of the experience of life of a person. You could mix the travel and the tourism school. It is only up to you.

Los viajes de idiomas, una nueva forma de aprender inglés.

Sí, los viajes de idiomas son una forma de aprender, no solo inglés, sino muchos idiomas. Es un sistema que ofrece otra cara de la enseñanza de idiomas. En todo caso, no creo que trate de reemplazar a un curso de idiomas normal, pero su impacto es totalmente diferente a unas clases de idiomas, ordinarias.

Si lo que uno desea es aprender inglés, la inmersión lingüística te lleva a un, por ejemplo, Londres, una ciudad donde se habla inglés, para que lo aprendas. Y no solo para que lo aprendas en un curso de unas cuantas horas, sino para que tengas la oportunidad de sumergirte en el idioma tanto como puedas.

Si en unas clases de idiomas, tu relación con los idiomas es de apenas dos horas diarias, en la inmersión lingüística la relación será total porque estás en un medio que solo habla esa lengua y con personas que la han aprendido siendo bebés y que por tanto, la tienen como lengua natural.

Los viajes lingüísticos son también muy educativos porque la gente tiene la oportunidad de conocer distintos niveles del idioma que aprende. Esto se debe a que en una inmersión no solo se aprender un idioma proveniente de un libro y que en la práctica, solo lo sabe tu profesor. Al salir de las clases de inmersión, uno se enfrentará con un mundo totalmente desconocido en el que se tendrá que vivir.

Esta necesidad de inserción ayuda mucho a que la persona vaya aprendiendo el idioma debido a la necesidad que tiene por hacerte entender y comunicarse con las otras personas. Quizá sea algo que algunos les pueda parecer, violento o agresivo, pero también es cierto que una buena forma de aprender algo es haciéndolo todos los días de todos los meses.

Y, en Londres, como era el ejemplo (aunque para el inglés encontramos desde USA hasta Australia, pasando por Inglaterra e Irlanda) uno tendrá que poner a prueba sus conocimientos día a día. Por otro lado, siempre es difícil acordarse de algo si solo lo practicas una vez cada día. Pero en cambio, es más fácil para uno aprenderse los pasados en inglés, si sabe que tiene que emplearlos en cualquier momento del día.

Los viajes lingüísticos son también una suerte de viaje de encuentro de uno mismo. A menos, claro, que uno decida viajar con amigos. Creo que lo más interesante de estas experiencias es hacerlo solo. Porque estando solo y en un contexto diferente al habitual uno empieza a darse cuenta de cómo es realmente (créanme que la rutina hace fácil olvidar esto).

Estar solos en un lugar nuevo da la oportunidad de conocer las cosas de forma diferente, tu mirada también estará libre de presiones y de influencias externas.

Así, el aprendizaje del inglés con los viajes de idiomas resulta ser una experiencia novedosa, amena, restauradora y muy educativa en los distintos niveles de la experiencia de vida de una persona. Solo es cuestión de decidirse.

Aprender idiomas, amistades o compañeros en los viajes lingüísticos.

Bueno, digamos que soy un chico idealista que ve la relación de JD y Turk como la amistad ideal que me gustaría tener con otro chico (incluso canto ‘guy love’). Traigo esto a colación porque ayer comentaba con un amigo que no veía desde el colegio, quien me comentaba su experiencia de inmersión lingüística en Boston hace unos años.

Me decía que fue muy aburrido ya que él viajó pensando que conocería a mucha gente genial y se divertiría como loco. Eso me hizo pensar en mis propias expectativas sociales durante mi viaje de inmersión.

Digamos que mi prioridad nunca fue el hacer amigos del alma, robar un auto con ellos y luego despertar un día y decir ‘¿dónde está mi auto?’. Es más, creo que mi objetivo en sí era bastante nerd porque quería saldar con el inglés y si algo divertido pasaba en el proceso, genial, y si no, pues normal.

Debido a que escogí la residencia de estudiantes, me tocó compartir habitación. No es un gran lío en verdad, aunque siempre es bueno preguntar veinte veces si la habitación es compartida y ‘con cuántos’, porque no debes suponer que siempre será con una sola persona.

Pero a mí no me importaba mucho eso. Aunque también debo aceptar que asumí, antes de pisar si quiera nueva tierra, que para evitarme cualquier mal entendido, todas mis cosas tendrían llave y nunca caminaría sin mis documentos y dinero. Y así fue durante toda mi estadía, mi tarjeta de débito, mi pasaporte y mis documentos, estaban conmigo, y, todo maniático, tenía copias legalizadas, en mi maleta, que además, tenía doble cerradura y un pequeño truquito que hacía que no cualquiera pudiera abrirla.

Irónicamente mi primer compañero de cuarto era la persona más descuidada del mundo. Dejaba el dinero tirado encima de su cama y, perdió su pasaporte en un momento, aunque tuvo suerte de que un ciudadano respetable lo encontrara y lo entregara a la delegación más cercana. Con este chico no hice más que una educada relación de compañeros de cuarto que no se entendían porque uno hablaba español y el otro no sé si chino o coreano.

Luego de que este tipo se fue, me tocó otro compañero, uno francés que iba un nivel más adelantado que yo, un tipo muy buena onda, estudiante de literatura o algo así, porque era muy culto y hablaba bastante bien el inglés –mejor que yo al menos- y en las noches conversábamos un poco antes de dormir y en los días libres, salimos alguna vez.

Y, creo que eso es lo que uno puede esperar sobre las relaciones sociales en la inmersión. No puede pensar que formará un Club de los Cinco o de plano un Club de la Pelea o cosas así. Pero siempre puedes contar con que tus compañeros de cuarto o de salón, están tan nerviosos e inseguros como tú y solo quieren hablar un poco de vez en cuando, aún cuando no haya muchas cosas en común.

Idiomas, comenzar y terminar de estudiar una lengua.

Muchos creen que hacer un viaje de inmersión lingüística implica que de plano los certificados que te den dirán que has aprendido el idioma de turno. Sin embargo, no es así. Como en cualquier escuela de idiomas en tu propia ciudad, en las escuelas del extranjero también expedirán un certificado del nivel a donde llegaste.Por otro lado, pues estaba pensando un poco, ahora que veo a mis primos de vuelta en clases y a sus padres buscando una escuela de inglés por las tardes, las muchas veces que uno empieza a estudiar una lengua como el inglés pero las pocas veces en que muchos de nosotros terminamos por recibir el certificado de haber terminado de estudiar la lengua.En varios casos, la universidad te pide un nivel intermedio para poder graduarte y en el trabajo a veces no suelen ser tan estrictos como un piensa y con que pongas ‘manejo del inglés a nivel de lectura’ es suficiente, a menos que pidan a un bilingüe, ese es otro tema.Ya sea por A o B, muchas personas no llegamos a terminar el inglés o el idioma de turno. Nos contentamos con lo que las exigencias mínimas de la sociedad piden. Eso es un poco deprimente. Claro, no digo que sea una obligación moral que termines de estudiar, no creo que vayamos al infierno en todo caso, aunque cuando uno piensa que estudiar un idioma es una carga y es solo un requisito formal para llenar en un formulario de trabajo, pues creo que las cosas no van a buen puerto.Uno debe siempre tratar de ver una utilidad en lo que hace. Y, aprender idiomas no es como cuando tus padres te piden que acompañes a tu prima adolescente sin cita a un vulgar baile que imita los bailes de las pelis americanas. Los beneficios de aprender un idioma no son morales ni económicos. Quizá económicos en alguna forma sí. Por ejemplo, al poder acceder a una beca completa para estudiar en Estados Unidos o Francia (sabiendo inglés o francés respectivamente) uno está demostrando que es capaz de expandir sus límites más allá de las fronteras físicas e idiomáticas y encima que te paguen por eso.Pero también está la oportunidad de postular a puestos de trabajo que requieren hablantes bilingües, cosa que no todos pueden realizar a cabalidad.Quien no entiende la riqueza de recursos que puede ofrecer el aprendizaje de un idioma, creerá siempre que estudiar una lengua es lo peor que le puede haber pasado. Y quien no aprovecha más allá del título que le darán luego de llegar a nivel intermedio o avanzado, deberá darse cuenta que está desaprovechando una buena oportunidad.No solo por los beneficios tácitos de conocer una segunda lengua, sino también por lo que implica enriquecerse a uno mismo al poder acceder de forma independiente a cosas novedosas, desde datos para el trabajo o estudios, hasta música, libros, juegos de video, arte y demás.

Estudiar un idioma, el tedio del inglés durante la vida escolar.

Muchos adolescentes deben odiar el hecho de tener que estudiar el inglés después de clases. Ya saben que no en todos los colegios hay implementado el inglés como curso o, si lo hay, a veces no es el mejor inglés que se pueda aprender.

Sin embargo también es cierto que es muy útil tener la oportunidad de estudiar idiomas cuando aún somos criaturas permeables en edad de aprendizaje. Créanme que cuando tienes veintitantos volver a enfrentarte con el inglés desde el principio no es nada agradable.

Cuando uno ya es adulto hay cosas que son más complicadas de aprender. Y no solo porque nos hemos vuelto un poco más cabezas duras –en palabras muy simples- sino también por las responsabilidades que uno tiene. Ya no se es más un adolescente cuyos padres lo mantienen y cuyos deberes son estudiar, hacerles la vida imposible a los padres y salir con los amigos.

Cuando uno empieza la vida adulta las responsabilidades se tornan serias, hay que ir a la universidad o sino trabajar, y en muchos casos, estudiar y trabajar además de que si sigues viviendo con los padres, pues sentirás que tienes que rendirles cuentas aunque ellos te digan que no.

Durante la etapa escolar además existe la oportunidad de que un joven pueda pensar en los viajes de estudios de idiomas al extranjero. Seguramente, si eres de los que estudiaba en un colegio con programa de intercambio, habrás visto alguna que otra vez, a alguien del exterior conviviendo por unos meses en la vida escolar.

Bueno, pues por general estos intercambios implican que un estudiante local intercambie con un estudiante de otro país. Por ejemplo a uno lo mandan a Londres con una familia inglesa y en cambio, al chico inglés lo mandan a nuestra escuela.

Pero para poder recurrir a estos intercambios hay que tener buenas notas o buenas influencias académicas.

Sin embargo, para quienes lleven inglés en institutos después de clases, también sabrán que se fomentan las experiencias de inmersión lingüística en estas escuelas de idiomas. Y no necesariamente hay que ser el primero de la clase. Estos intercambios fomentan la posibilidad de que un joven conozca nuevas culturas así como tener la oportunidad de sumergirse en la sociedad que habla la lengua que estudia.

La inmersión lingüística es una forma muy entretenida en que una persona aprende de una lengua y se da cuenta que esta no está remitida solo a un libro de estudios.

En el caso del inglés hay muchas escuelas de idiomas que ofrecen la oportunidad para que los jóvenes en edad escolar viajen en la época de vacaciones. Además los destinos suelen ser bastante variados por lo que hay mucho de donde elegir.

Los dos destinos más famosos son Nueva York y Londres, sin embargo Estados Unidos y Reino Unido, como países, tienen muchas otras ciudades que ofrecen lecciones de inglés. Y, tener la oportunidad de viajar al extranjero siendo joven, es algo que no todos tienen.

Estudiar idiomas en el extranjero, aprendo más o aprendo menos.

El que no haya aprovechado un viaje al extranjero para morir, aunque sea una vez, seguramente estará arrepentido. Y, es bueno ir aceptando, con el tiempo, que para los viajes de inmersión, uno tiene que tener una cuota en donde poner las anécdotas ‘que nunca le contaría a mis padres’.

Claro que hay personas que no saben poner límites. Debemos recordar que los viajes lingüísticos son para estudiar un idioma, una salida hasta tarde un día, despertarte otro día sin recordar cómo llegaste a la residencia de estudiantes, son anécdotas divertidas (siempre y cuando no te hayan asalto claro).

En los viajes de idiomas, hay dos extremos que, aunque no parezca, son difíciles de no evitar por el miedo que generan las consecuencias. Uno de los extremos es el del tipo o tipa, obsesionado con las clases, que solo asiste a las lecciones, luego se la pasa estudiando y asiste solo a los paseos grupales. Es decir, un estudiante adicto.

El otro extremo, creo que es el más conocido y también en el que es más fácil terminar es, transformar el viaje de idiomas en una versión de ‘Dónde está mi auto’ mezclada con ‘La venganza de los nerds’ y Kelso y Fez de That 70’s show. Es decir, hacer de tu momento de estudios una fiesta de la cual, no solo no saldrás bien parado sino de donde probablemente no salgas conociendo más el idioma sino conociéndote menos a ti mismo.

Y, créanme que es fácil caer en la tentación de la fiesta eterna a pesar de estar en Londres o Nueva York, solo basta con encontrarte gente que hable tu idioma, para que la nostalgia por el terruño se convierta en un ‘vamos a divertirnos’. El otro resultado es, como decía antes, aislarse de todo el mundo y vivir solo en la residencia.

Como decía también, es importante saber balancear nuestros estudios en el extranjero. Aprender un idioma en Londres, por ejemplo, no significa que solo estemos ahí para hacer eso. Pero tampoco implica que vaya a salir todas las noches a ligar con inglesitas ingenuas. Si hemos viajado ha sido para aprender una lengua, conocer la cultura que habla esta lengua y una ciudad distinta que nos ofrece muchas oportunidades.

Pero cuando uno aprovecha mal las posibilidades que te ofrece el viaje de inmersión, entonces el resultado serán cosas como: ‘uno no aprende nada cuando se va de viaje, al final es lo mismo irse por su cuenta, gasté demasiado para terminar sabiendo nada’ y un sinfín de frases por el estilo que son consecuencia de la irresponsabilidad personal.

Divertirse siempre es permitido, y cuando uno está de viaje y goza de tanta independencia, se dará cuenta que la diversión no significa solo hacer cosas locas, beber hasta las cuatro de la mañana cuando dentro de tres horas hay clases. Conocer a otras personas (que no es lo mismo que ligar) y conocer, en general, un universo diferente, es de por sí, divertido.

English, learn and teach abroad

I do not know which will be the requirements to teach a language in other countries but I want to comment the experience of a friend who now is studying in a university in The United States thanks a scholarship for his master and doctorate.

In his case, he has two options for making a job in the university. It had to be like some kind of ‘contribution’ for his scholarship. In the first year, he was the assistant of a teacher but in the second, they offered the opportunity to teach Spanish.

Originally, my friend thought that it was not a good idea, he felt little prepared for speaking in Spanish to English-speakers. But in this case, the ‘offer’ was an ‘order’ besides the fact that he could not refuse, in fact he must be prepared for a situation like that.

So, he started been the substitute of the teacher of Spanish of a group in the university. He had to correct exams and substitute the professor when he could not assist. With the time, he understood that teaching a language is not that complicated as he thought. Nevertheless, he also realized that teaching a language is not similar to the simple pedagogy, because it involves to teaching to adult persons a language that they have not handled before.

Now, he think that when he finishes his doctorate, he will study something related to the education of the Spanish language, probably to extend more his professional horizons. Now, he is grateful for the opportunity that had in the university for the experience. Originally, he was feeling insecure especially because the students who had got a scholarship has to demonstrate that they are good students and deserve more than anybody, studying in the university.

Which is why, he was not possible to fail. He told me that he felt worried about the classes that he had to substitute because he remembered when he did his first travel language and his teacher was terrible. He felt that he was teaching too badly but his students were very satisfied.

He thought very much about those classes to treat that “his” classes were useful to his ‘pupils’. So, he realized that the education of a language is not only a responsibility of the teacher, but more than anything than the pupils. Especially when you are inside the idiomatic and positive environment. In the travel, you have the possibility for practicing and hearing the language constantly. Whereas, in normal courses the teacher is the only one who refers to that language.

The students of that English class were of his age and also university students, therefore he understood that they did not have a lot of time to study the language, though they always were treating to practicing in class.

Learning languages, taking advantage of your free time

Well, we know that if we make a travel language, we are not going to make a daily task. Another one is, talking about motivation; find what to do in our free time. Especially when you make a long travel abroad.

I have never liked the sports but I remembered that sometimes I tried to run. London is pretty in this sense, has pretty streets where you can take a walk, but if you are lazy for walking even for going to the bathroom, it is probably not the best idea.

At first, this idea was suggested me by a few girls who were in my advanced English class. They were going out to run together every morning before classes and due to that they really looked good, I thought that it would not be a bad idea to run with them.

We ran for three days, and when the day finished I was totally over and immediately I preferred stopped running. I was exhausted, I could not move my legs, even I had to be absent to the school and a friend did to me the favor of buying me an ointment for my muscles. In addition, I would have not gone to a doctor, because doctors in that country are very expensive. After so, I rejected sports as a way for taking advantage of my free time. And I decided to spend it in hiking; the hike is a worthy sport that even the Pope practiced.

As you know, it is not necessary to spent all day long for walking, even if you do not know the city, it is normal that the same people who live there do not know every street.

After my terrible sport experience, I have two new friends: a map and the reports about the reduced days in the museums. This way I could go easily to different and interesting places. Also, in that time, I started to like the fried fish with French fries, which says pretty much about my health care.

However, there were other people really concerned with sports. Someone told me that in the house where he was living, the owners offered him a bicycle for using as a transport and he accepted it, so that he went from his house to the school every day. Even it was only twenty blocks; I believe that I died for only putting a foot in the pedal.

Not every day, you are going to know what to do in this kind of travel s, so that it is not a bad idea taking notes about things happened to you. For example, once it happened to me going to the games to play in the balance beams, a very drippy activity but I spent a very happy time. The principal idea is that you have many interesting things to do in an unknown city and not they all imply paying for coming in.

English, the fast food language

With pain, I must accept that sometimes the cheapest thing for eating in The United States or
England, it is the fast food. And when you want to take care your pockets for better expenses, you do not have any more than press the belt, or rather, slacken, because with the “delicious” that you have in the fast foods (even the name is easy to say), you must gain a few pounds, kilos, or whatever you call it in your system of measures.

In London, I used to eat at McDonald’s when I did not buy the classic French fries fish. Fruits, I felt hurt thinking about them because in London every fruit is genetically adulterated. However, I think that English language is not spoken as fast as Americans so that I am speaking about the food now.

The other day, I was reading the news about the McCollege, proposed in England, and I found a friend who had arrived from a language travel in New York. Since that I could not avoid to think about this fast foods.

On the other hand, my good friend Christian seems to have returned with a better notion about what to learn a language is. At least, he could not escape of the classes in New York (like we could here) because when he did it once, he got lost and ended around Queens, so in some way, he learned the lesson.

Nevertheless, he won wisdom but also gained weight. The reason is, as me, we are very stingy about the healthy food: we prefer abundant and cheap food; in his case, he ate four times by day at McDonald’s. Of course, I remembered that the service was not a good thing.

What can I say of similar news? On the other hand, I know that it is a good think for someone who wants to get a job abroad without resting and after return to his country to invest all the money. But I thought that the time he invested will never return because sometimes this young people lose their university studies.

In this sense, it could be positive that companies that take young people allow me “academics” permission. However, I know that this McCollege is probably an exaggeration; nobody says that if you sell a hamburger you are going to obtain a Phd, but it will be a certificate that is equivalent to college to get best studies in your country.

I suppose that in this case it is ok, if a worker of McDonald’s has the possibility of acceding to best studies, probably it is a decent step of this type of multinational company.
